Damit sind historische          Entwicklungen mit den pers\u00f6nlichen Etappen \u00fcber das Thema verkn\u00fcpft. So          sind Freunds Bilder zugleich Zeitbilder, Dokumente, Interpretationen und          subkutane Tageb\u00fccher. Das wird schon bei der ersten Bildreihe zu den Mai-Kundgebungen          in Frankfurt und Worms im Jahre 1932 klar. Da\u00df es sich dabei um die letzte          nicht gleichgeschaltete Veranstaltung dieser Art in Deutschland handelte,          gibt den Bildern eine Brisanz, die die damals 24-j\u00e4hrige nicht ahnen konnte.          Wenngleich man ihre Sympathien f\u00fcr die kommunistische Bewegung auch in          der Wahl Ihrer Objekte ansieht, so ist doch das entscheidende inhaltliche          Moment, da\u00df Freund eben auch die Fried- und Hoffnungslosigkeit der Abgebildeten          dokumentiert. Den Sieg des Nationalsozialismus kann man vielleicht nicht          ahnen, die M\u00fcdigkeit der Menschen im Kampf gegen ihn nimmt man allerdings          sehr deutlich dann wahr, wenn man in die Gesichter der Kinder blickt.<\/p>\n<p>Sicher, Freund hat          recht, wenn sie sagt: &#8220;Fotografie ist keine Kunst, sondern ein Produkt          der Zeit&#8221;, aber es kommt nat\u00fcrlich darauf an, diesem Produkt eine          Sprache zu verleihen. Das machen dann die Pariser Bilder deutlich, die          allesamt auf dem &#8220;1. Internationalen Schriftsteller-Kongre\u00df zur Verteidigung          der Kultur&#8221; (1935) aufgenommen wurden. Nicht nur die Tatsache, welche          Menschen hier zusammenkamen, sondern auch wie sich ihr Zusammenkommen          manifestiert, macht aus diesen Bildern, insbesondere den Serien, kleine          Filme, die die Haltungen der Beteiligten eindringlich zur Darstellung          bringt: den Schriftsteller Andr\u00e9 Malraux zum Beispiel, auf der einen Seite          wild fuchtelnd, auf der anderen Seite mit der Zigarette im Mundwinkel          zugleich \u00dcberlegenheit und Machtlosigkeit preisgebend. Wie das die Freund          eingefangen hat, das ist nun wieder doch auch gro\u00dfe Kunst.<\/p>\n<p>Die sp\u00e4ten Bilder          aus den Jahren 1957-1962 gelten der Stadt Berlin, jener Stadt, die sie          1933 verlassen mu\u00dfte, die sie jetzt neu wiederfand. Was sie fand, war          ein v\u00f6llig ver\u00e4ndertes Berlin: Eine Stadt die sich einerseits im Stadium          der Konsolidierung befand, andererseits im Vollzug ihrer endg\u00fcltigen Spaltung          durch den Mauerbau. Diese Schizophrenie ist letzthin auch ein Gegenstand          ihrer Berlin-Bilder (der hohle Pathos der Stalin-Allee, die Leere um die          Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ged\u00e4chtnis-Kirchen-Ruine im Zusammenhang mit dem futuristische          Nachtglanz der Kongre\u00dfhalle). Aktuell sind auch ihre Kommentare zu den          Bildern geblieben, wenn es hei\u00dft: &#8220;Vier Ost-Mark sind eine West-Mark          wert.&#8221; Gewi\u00df, die Relationen \u00e4ndern sich, nicht jedoch die Tatsachen.          Darum ist der Trennungsproze\u00df damals \u00e4hnlich schmerzhaft wie der Heilungsproze\u00df          in der Gegenwart. Und eben das sind die Fotos von Gis\u00e8le Freund auch,          feinsinnige Reproduktionen der kleinen Haken und Risse innerhalb, nicht          hinter dem Abgebildeten. Da\u00df Freund dies zu leisten vermochte im Genre          der Fotografie, macht sie dann wahrhaft zur engagierten K\u00fcnstlerin, der          der sch\u00f6ne Schein nichts taugt.<\/p>\n<div
